Agencies

Depending on the location of your property and the type of planning and development project, you may need to get approval from a third party agency. Review the agencies and resources available in the Municipality of Trent Lakes. 

Lakelands Public Health

LPH provides public health programs and services to residents in the County of Haliburton, City of Kawartha Lakes, City and County of Peterborough and Northumberland County that promote healthy living, protect against disease, and prevent illness and injury. 

Effective April 1st 2024, the Municipality of Trent Lakes is the authority who grants approval for all septic permits and is responsible for the enforcement of section 8 of the Ontario Building Code

Kawartha Conservation

Visit Kawartha Conservation if your property is located within the former townships of Harvey or Galway. You may require their approval for building and planning projects.

When completing a building project near a shoreline, a silt fence may be required.

Ontonabee Conservation

Ontonabee Conservation regulates the wellhead protection areas of Alpine Village, Buckhorn Lake Estates and Kinmount Area.  Any development within the regulated areas will require approval under section 59 of the Clean Water Act

Curve Lake First Nations

Visit Curve Lake First Nations to review the Duty to Consult and Accommodation Standards for Curve Lake.

Ontario Clean Water Agency

The Ontario Clean Water Agency governs the two wells within the Municipality. These wellheads are located in the Alpine Lake Village, Buckhorn Lake View Estates and Kinmount Area. Any development within the regulated wellhead areas will require approval from Ontonabee Conservation

Peterborough Roads Department

Contact the County of Peterborough Roads department for:

  • New construction adjacent to a County Road (36, 37, 49, 121 or 507)
  • New entrances to a County Road
  • Mailbox damage/potholes or road conditions on a County Road

Ministry of Transportation

Contact the Ministry of Transportation for:

  • Setback requirements and permits for entrances off provincial highways
  • Sign permits for provincial highways

Trent Severn Waterway

Many of the properties within Trent Lakes have frontage along the Trent Severn Waterway. These lakes include:

  • Pigeon Lake
  • Little Bald Lake
  • Big Bald Lake
  • Upper and Lower Buckhorn lakes
  • Lovesick Lake

Please call 1-705-750-4900 before you begin a building or development project. 

Ministry of Natural Resources

A permit under Public Lands Act is required for:

  • Any docks and boathouses not located on a body of water within the Trent-Severn Waterway System.
  • Any retaining wall construction.
  • Shoreline alteration
  • In-water Works
  • Placement of fill on shorelines
  • Dredging
  • Construction of building, structures, roads, trailer, or water crossings on Crown Land

Electrical Safety Authority

The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) ensures all electrical work is done safely and to code. Any development or building project that includes electrical work will require a permit from the ESA and will be required to close building permits.

Ministry of the Environment

The Ministry of the Environment requires well information be sent to them. 

Well Setbacks:

  • 50 feet from septic beds if the well is drilled
  • 100 feet from septic beds if the well is dug
